The leaves are letting go. The nights stretch longer. Gardens collapse back into the earth, candles appear in windows, and somewhere beneath all the pumpkins and ghost stories is an older feeling:
Something is closer.
Across traditions, this time of year has long been associated with remembrance, death, ancestors, spirits, and the thinning of the veil between worlds.
But remembrance doesn't always begin with a family tree.
Sometimes it begins with an old photograph.
A recipe written in someone else's handwriting.
A song you haven't heard in years.
The collar still tucked away in your nightstand.
The indentation they always left in their favourite spot.
The strange experience of loving someone who is no longer physically here—and discovering that the love itself hasn't gone anywhere.
This month's ritual is an invitation to spend some intentional time in that space.
Not to explain what happens after death.
Not to tell you what you must believe.
Simply to remember.
The energy is... woodsmoke caught in cold evening air, old photographs curling at the edges, candle wax running down a bottle, dried leaves skittering across pavement, familiar handwriting, the smell of a house that no longer exists, an empty bed that still feels like it belongs to someone, and the strange way memory can make someone absent feel suddenly, impossibly close.
Energy changes form, but it does not simply disappear.
And neither does love.
🌑 What’s Inside
Pocket Grimoire Zine
An 8-page colour zine devoted to ancestors, memory, grief, Samhain, and the thinning veil.
Inside you'll find words of wisdom from your witchy auntie, seasonal correspondences, a monthly tarot reading for the coven, and gentle explorations of the many ways we remember and honour those who came before us.
We'll consider ancestry beyond a simple family tree, the complicated relationships we can have with lineage, and the people, creatures, places, traditions, and stories that continue to shape us long after they're gone.
And tucked among these pages is something new.
For the first month of Pages from the Coven, Shawn and I have submitted a piece of our own: an illustration of Tua, Bear, and Sweetie Tom gathered around a Samhain bonfire—with Tua, naturally, choosing to jump the fire on her broom.
This is only the beginning. Future pages will make room for artwork, spells, writing, recipes, reflections, and other pieces created by witches within our little mail coven.
October also marks one full turn of the wheel with Coven Mail Club—thirteen months of rituals, letters, paper, ink, photographs, and tiny pieces of magic travelling through the post.

I photographed The Shimmering Veil in Cypress Hills in 2016, using a prism to catch the light at just the right angle and scatter it across my lens like the northern lights—all created entirely in-camera.
Ten years later, while searching my archives for October's print, I cropped tightly into the original photograph and suddenly discovered an entirely different image hiding inside it.
For a month devoted to memory, spirits, and what might exist just beyond what we can ordinarily see, it felt perfect.

Some griefs leave particularly small footprints.
They sleep beside us. Follow us from room to room. Sit in our laps while we work. Meet us at the door.
And then, one day, they're gone.
Through the Veil was written especially for the animals who have shared our lives—and whose absence can leave an enormous silence behind them.
Inspired by Samhain and the thinning veil, this month's ritual creates a quiet space to honour a beloved animal companion, remember them as they were in life, and spend a little intentional time with the love that remains after they're gone.
